Air Shafts
Air shafts for strong gripping, balanced centring and stable running in winding and unwinding, with aluminium and steel bodies and custom-built options.
In flexo and gravure printing, steady tension and a straight web path are preconditions for print quality, and unwind and rewind equipment shapes both.
On roll-to-roll presses, flexographic and gravure (rotogravure) alike, the material is unwound, passes through the print units and the drying section, and is then rewound onto a new roll. For a sharp print with colours landing in register, the web has to travel the length of the line at constant tension and along a straight path. That makes the mechanical equipment at the unwind and rewind an unseen but decisive part of print quality.
As a roll unwinds, its diameter keeps shrinking. If brake torque is not adjusted to match, tension rises or falls, leading to stretching, slackness and misregister. Fixing the lateral position of the web before the print units keeps colour and edge alignment in check. At the rewind, the printed web needs to be wound without creases and with straight edges, ready for the next process, whether that is laminating, slitting or bag making.

Safety chucks that hold the shaft securely in the machine and lock themselves on the first turn, even if the operator forgets.

Brake, clutch and tension control equipment for keeping material tension under control during winding and unwinding.

Systems that use a microprocessor for precise edge and colour-line tracking and correct web wander as rolls are unwound and rewound.

Lightweight air shaft with an extruded, anodised aluminium body; journals are CNC-machined to the customer's drawing.

Balanced steel air shaft made from cold-drawn tube with a hard chrome finish, for heavy rolls and demanding lines.

Safety chuck fitted on the outer face of the frame, in slide- or flange-mounted versions, that locks itself on the first turn even if the operator forgets.

Air-actuated pneumatic brake that generates braking torque by friction, used on unwind stands to control web tension.
Closed-loop PID tension controller that keeps material at the same tension at every roll diameter during unwinding and rewinding.

Microprocessor-based web guide controller that follows the material edge or a printed line and corrects sideways drift.
