AYS Makina friction rings support even, consistent winding in winding and slitting applications through controlled torque transmission. By helping to balance tension differences between rolls, they contribute to winding quality and production efficiency.

A friction ring is a ring-shaped element fitted in a row along a friction shaft, with a separate core mounted on each ring. The shaft rotates, and the rings turn with it while allowing a controlled amount of slip. This slip lets every roll on the same shaft wind at the speed that suits its own diameter and tension.

Where are they used?

On a slitting machine, the master roll is cut into narrow strips, and these are rewound onto separate cores on a common shaft in the rewind section. Even small variations in material thickness make the rolls build up at different rates. If all the cores were fixed rigidly to the shaft, some rolls would be wound too tight and others too loose. Friction rings compensate for this difference and help each roll wind more evenly and firmly. Slitting film, foil, labels and paper are typical examples.

Our approach

We handle friction rings together with our self-cam friction shaft, which is built for the rewind sections of slitting machines. The available ring widths are listed in the technical table on that product page. As friction rings are wear parts, we consider requests for replacement rings for your existing shafts as well as for new shaft orders.

What you can request

  • A complete set of rings supplied with a new friction shaft
  • Replacement rings for your existing shaft
  • Ring widths to suit different core widths
  • Ancillary parts that should be replaced together with the rings

What to consider when choosing

  • Ring width: it should match the width of the strip and the core.
  • Core inner diameter: the outside of the ring must grip the core correctly.
  • Material and tension: thin films and heavy papers need different slip torques; in many designs this torque is set by air pressure.
  • Wear: uneven winding and damaged roll edges can indicate that the rings need checking.

Requesting a quotation

To identify the right part, send us the part number or a dimensioned drawing of the existing ring, the shaft diameter and ring width, the quantity you need and the material you wind. If there is no drawing, a clear photograph with dimensions added is also helpful. You can send your request through our contact page.
