Overview

AYS Makina friction shafts balance tension differences between rolls in slitting and winding applications, supporting even, controlled winding. With precise tension control they contribute to balanced running and consistent winding quality when winding multiple narrow rolls.

The friction shaft is a self-cam differential air shaft with friction rings along its body. Each ring carries its own core and turns with the shaft while allowing a controlled amount of slip. As a result, rolls wound on the same shaft can each be wound at their own tension, even when their diameters build up at different rates.

Although these shafts can be used in many applications, they are designed in particular for the rewind sections of slitting machines. They suit operations that want to shorten roll change times and simplify winding. Standard diameters, ring widths and warranty details are listed in the table below.

Features

  • Self-cam friction design
  • Individual slip and tension balance for each roll on the same shaft
  • Ring widths to suit different core widths
  • Simple operation and quick roll changes
  • Replacement rings available as wear parts

Applications

The friction shaft is used in the rewind sections of slitting machines, where materials such as plastic film, foil, labels and paper are cut into narrow strips. It suits applications where small variations in material thickness make roll diameters differ, yet every roll still has to be wound evenly and firmly. See our winding lines page for application examples, and our friction rings page for more on the rings themselves.

To configure your shaft correctly, please share:

  • Core inner diameter and core width
  • Shaft length and the number of rolls on the shaft
  • Material type and thickness range
  • Roll weight and line speed
  • A dimensioned drawing of the shaft journals, or the machine drawing
